I think Valentine's Day might be my second favorite holiday (Fourth of July being the first). Many people tend to dislike the holiday because of various reasons, but I think we should embrace the day.
It's all about Love.
I understand that sometimes it's sad to be single and not have someone to buy you flowers or take you out to a nice dinner. But is that really the most important thing? Sure I would love to spend time with someone I cared about. Sure I would love to get flowers. But I don't find it necessary to enjoy a holiday.
I actually really like being single on Valentine's Day. And this year I'm glad I was. I ended up doing a lot of things that I love.
-I went to work. I really do love my job. I was super happy to see the students and talk to my coworkers.
-I helped a friend with a research study. And it was interesting.
-I went for a run. That was probably the best decision I made.
-I dyed my hair. It might sound lame, but I like switching up my hair color once in awhile.
-I delivered Valentine's. Who wouldn't want to spread joy? I want other people to feel loved and be happy.
-I played the piano. And I bought new piano music. Oh, and I sang. I love music.
-I face timed with my sister who lives in Boston. It was really nice to talk to her, see her, and catch up. Plus her husband was out of town. I'm sure it's not fun to spend Valentine's without your significant other.
I definitely made good use of my day. I didn't feel obligated to do anything. I just did what I wanted to do.
I think it's important to remember what the day is about: Love. And not just romantic love.
It's about the love of the life you have and the world you live in. :)

Chapter 41: 2013 in Review
2013 was such a great year. My slogan was: Embrace Life. And you know what, I definitely embraced life the entire year. I love the concept of embracing because it means living. I think it's more important to embrace than it is to accept or deal with. Those words have such a negative connotation. Embrace is so positive and that's what my life is about.
I, as usual, had 5 resolutions to focus on throughout the year. I'd like to tell you about each of them and how I really embraced them.
1. Call more/Text Less (have meaningful conversations)
I'll admit, I did a poor job on this one. I still text more than I want to. It's just so convenient! But.....luckily I have friends who helped me with this one without even knowing it. I met a few people this year who really had awesome conversations with me. I learned so much and I really cherish those deep and meaningful conversations. I also had a moment when I accidentally pocket dialed my friend Lara. In the end, I had a 50 minute conversation with her. That meant so much to me and I realized, I should do that more often, but not just on accident. I love talking to people, so I hope that I can continue to have meaningful conversations in the years to come.
2. Keep a photo-a-day journal
Indeed I did! For Christmas 2012 my sister Stephanie made me a journal with 365 pages for photos. I was exciting to get it started. At the beginning of the year it was hard. I felt weird taking pictures of people or what not. And some days, I missed. But the more and more I did it, the more I loved it. And people understood what I was doing so I didn't need to feel stupid. I had a blast and looking back on the photos I laugh at all the things I did during the year. It's awesome to see what describes each day.
3. Let faith grow greater than fear
At the beginning of 2013 I have never been so positive in my life. I didn't really fear too much and my days were happy. When a down time came, it didn't last long. I loved it. Towards the end of the year, this resolution sort of went to the back of my mind, and at times at the back of my heart. I slipped a little and let fear take over. But I found refuge when I started going to the temple regularly. Every Friday I tried to go right after work since the temple was right around the corner basically. That definitely helped me in so many ways and I found more peace in my life. I also found refuge in going for walks. I would walk from my house, to downtown, to my favorite place: Memory Grove. I find nature very important in my life and it builds my faith. I let go of fears and let my heart guide me a little more. This is definitely a resolution I will always work on. Fear is prominent in our lives. But that doesn't mean we have to let it consume us.
4. Don't let people walk all over you (become a leader)
I think I did a good job and a bad job on this one. Throughout the year I really just did what I wanted. I wasn't going to wait around for people. I think that's being a leader in a sense. I showed people that I would go on an adventure, or do something I wanted, even if it meant alone. A leader doesn't need direct followers. Sometimes becoming a leader means leading yourself. And I did just that. Again, towards the end of the year I found myself slipping and I might have let people 'walk over me' in one way or another. But that isn't going to happen again. I learned from my mistakes and this year taught me that I can be a leader.
5. Fall in love
Now I want to tell you that this didn't mean fall in love with someone. That was an option, but I put this down as a resolution to fall in love with someone OR something. I fell in love a couple times. I wanted to fall in love because I wanted to open my heart to new things. Embrace life you know? So I fell in love with my job. I LOVE being a mentor to high schoolers. Honestly I would work at this job forever, but it's not a career. It's a foundation. But having a foundation of love is definitely a good thing so I'm grateful. The other thing I fell in love with? IRELAND. I travelled outside the country for the first time in my life! I knew I'd fall in love. The beauty, the culture, the adventure. Everything was amazing. And I was able to get away for away.
Sorry if I disappointed and didn't fall in love with 'someone', but one day I will, and that's something you just can't force or make a resolution about.
This year really set a mood for my life. My future. I feel motivated to make changes, changes that I've always wanted to make. I feel better than I have in a long time. And I feel like I know what I need to do in order to be happy and make a difference. Of course it's going to take time, but I'm going to hold on to what I have.
In 2013 I:
-Travelled outside the U.S. for the first time
-Visited Boston for the first time since I graduated
-Got a PR in a Half Marathon (and beat my dad's top time)
-Dated a lot more
-Saw two of my siblings get married

-Enjoyed walking alone in nature
-Went to the temple a lot more
-Experimented with face paint
-Met crazy lady and attended a Utah football game (still a BYU fan)
-Got my first black eye
-EMBRACED LIFE
I'm so happy with what 2013 gave me and I'm ready to take on 2014. Stay tuned for my new slogan as well as my new resolutions. Trust me, it's going to be good.

Chapter 40: Life of Pi
Recently I finished the book, "Life of Pi" but Yann Martel. It's now on my favorite books list.
I won't tell you what it's all about, the plot and all, but I will say that it is well worth reading. I felt very connected to the book and had to keep a piece of paper and pen by me in order to write down quotations that I felt really impacted me. I loved every page and every moment of the story.
I also really enjoyed the religious aspect of the book. I connect to aspects in life that are spiritual, which is probably why I connected to the book so easily. Once I finished I was amazed. I didn't want to stop reading. I craved more. But alas, there has to be an ending, and it was a grand one.
After reading the book, I went to see the move with a good friend of mine. I really wanted to finish the book first and I am glad that I did.
I saw the movie in 3D and I must say that I am usually skeptical of 3D movies. But this one is a must see in 3D. It was beautiful and breathtaking. The shots were amazing and I enjoyed every moment of the movie, just as I did the book. I knew to go in with the expectation that it would not be exactly like the book, but I think the movie did the book justice. I might even say that the movie is on my favorite movies list.
At the end of the movie, or a little before the actual end, I shed a tear or two. I am not ashamed at all. I see it as a really good sign. I don't like to cry in movies, or really in front of people. This movie touched my heart and I had already read the book and knew what was going on. That's how I knew it was a good movie. It touched my heart. I couldn't help but cry because again, I could relate to what was being said. This is a moment I cherish.
My recommendation is to read the book then go see the movie (preferably in 3D). Both affect the audience in different ways. As they should.
"You must take life the way it comes at you and make the best of it." (Ch. 35)

Chapter 39: Bye Bye Boston
![]() |
Getting ready for my one-way flight to Utah
Graduation: BA in Economics
The first two years of being in Boston were brutal. I kind of hated Boston. I had a hard time adjusted to a new life and my attitude was not the greatest. But I never transferred. I told myself I didn't want to give up. And I didn't.
The next two years were better and I found my love for Boston. My time did not get easier, but my attitude did change. I learned to embrace this new life and I had some of the best adventures. Not to mention the people I met here are amazing. Many of them became like family members to me and I will miss them so much.
My original roommates. Two of my closest friends from BU.
Spiritually I went through a lot and learned lessons I needed to learn. I am a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I truly believe it. I have been through dark times and I don't think people realize this. I wasn't always the goody good girl. I didn't do anything horrible, but I did doubt. I can tell you though that I believe and I know that through prayer and scripture study, I found my way to truth and comfort. Satan hit me pretty hard and I had to fight each and every day. I cried, I hit my feelings from those around me, and I went through a lot of pain. But I got through it. And I wouldn't have been able to do that without this church. My turning point was actually this last semester. I slipped a little bit. I was still doing the 'checklist' items: scripture reading, going to church, going to institute, etc.....But there was more I needed to do. Going is not enough. So I fought my battles and I relied on the Lord. Sitting here right now, I can smile. I look back and realize that those experiences shaped me into who I am today. I am happier and I got through some horrible moments. I survived. But even more than that, I learned and I grew as an individual. I figured out more so who I am! I am grateful for those dark times, because I was able to search for truth and light and see the blessings in my life.
I laughed a lot these past four years. Looking back, I did some pretty crazy things. Maybe not crazy in the way others look at it, but crazy to me. I broke out of my shell. I am no longer the quiet and shy girl who rarely talks. I talk a lot. And I am not afraid to make new friends. Actually I LOVE IT! I met some amazing people this last semester. And I found friendship just within the 4 months time. And people accepted me for who I was, even if I was weird.
I learned to play the guitar and I created music during my time in Boston. That is a gift I am forever grateful for. Music defines a lot of my life and the guitar has opened my eyes, mind, and heart. It's amazing what you learn when learning a new instrument. I cannot wait to get home and play on the front porch as well as put my fingers on our piano and let the music flow. I am so grateful my mom had me take piano lessons all the way up to my Senior year of High School. Music is powerful.
My guitar: Boston
Just a few of the people I got to know in my last semester
I kept running. Running helped me survive in Boston. Boston is where I ran my first 10K, and I continued to run that. I ran more, and I developed a deep connection with going on a run. After all, I do call myself the runaway girl. :)
Of course I couldn't have had this experience without the help of my parents. Their example to me makes me want to give the same blessing to my kids. I am the luckiest girl ever. My parents raised me so well, and thanks to them, I am strong.
This is definitely not a goodbye. I will be in Boston again one day. After all I do love it. Boston has a very special place in my heart and it can't all be described in a blog.
To those who have been in the same place for a very long time, I recommend taking a chance and making a change. I am so glad I didn't stay in Utah. Even if I didn't do the things I wanted at the time, leaving brought new talents to me. I learned more and I did things I never really saw myself doing. I love learning.
So I will see you later Boston. You'll always be in my heart. And I officially named my guitar Boston. After all, Boston is extremely special to me. I would not have lived my life differently. I'm glad I spent four years of school in Boston.
Now.....on to Utah. :)

Chapter 38: Just what I needed
Today was a great day and to top it all off my sister and her boyfriend came by my place for a visit. I figured it would just be a chill hang out for awhile, but no they both surprised me with a case of Mexican coca colas! For those of you who don't know.....this is my favorite. My room back home is sort of decorated with the bottles. And it tastes so much better than the regular coca cola you buy in the store.

I am writing this more than just as a thank you to them, but to say that life is grand! February came and is now gone. It was an interesting month of craziness. But it's over now and I have been blessed with some amazing moments in my life. I have had some wonderful conversations with friends, new people, and my family.
It's small moments like this that make me smile. Although life can get hectic, it can also bring about special and happy moments. And we should never forget that. Take in those moments and let yourself be happy. It's okay. Life doesn't always have to be busy and fast pace. Slow down once in awhile and look around. You often find you are surrounded by some amazing people and amazing beauties.
Today is just what I needed. :)

Chapter 37: The Year 2012
Well it seems as though 2011 is gone, my winter break is gone, and I am in Boston for my last semester at Boston University. How did I get this old? It seems weird that I have made it this far and that I am so close to being done with college! It's amazing how much I have grown and how much I have learned in just about four years. I am definitely a different person than I was Freshman year. It's good though, not only am I growing up to be an adult, but I am keeping the kid inside of me. :)
I am a little scared. I figure fear is natural for this time of my life. I am not quite sure what to think, but I do know that there is more for me to learn. I have many adventures ahead of me. Good and bad. Gotta have both to have a true experience! Haha.
How does it feel to be a Senior in college?
Relieving. Stressful. Relaxing. Fun. Content. Prepared. Scared. Excited. Adventurous. Worried. Thrilled. Terrified. Hilarious. Odd. Confused. Grand.
It's the year 2012 (supposedly the world is coming to an end). But before then, I get to graduate college. It's a true accomplishment. And holding that degree will make me feel like I am worth something in this world, even if others do not see that. I know it. And it's not just the degree, but the experiences.
I guess that's all I have to say for now. My 2012 slogan is: BE BOLD. So I am going to be bold and this year is going to be one of the craziest. Life is always changing. We change with it. And you know what.....it's extremely fun, challenging, and amazing.

Chapter 36: Final Fall at BU
Remember how I was going to blog about my Fall Semester as a Senior in college? Fail. I am not home in Utah about to go to bed in my own bed, my own comfy bed. But before I do that I wanted to tell you about a few things I learned over the semester. I'll type one thing for each class.
OB 221-Organizational Behavior
In this class I learned about my personality type: INFJ. It was interesting to see how I differed from my other teammates. I also related this to the quote from The Italian Job movie: FINE:Freaked Out, Insecure, Neurotic, and Emotional. I find that to often be who I am. I am proud to be an INFJ though. And I definitely strengthened other parts of my personality that were beforehand weaker.
EC 333-Antitrust Economics (the actual name was Market Organizations and Public Policy I believe)
This class was awesome. And although I don't have anything too specific, I did learn that I like learning about Antitrust cases. I found the class to be really interesting and more my style. Oh, but I do remember we studied the case: Utah Pie vs. Continental Baking (1967?). I was happy to hear the words, Salt Lake City, in a class. I felt cool, even though no one knew I was from there. Utah Pie won the case, just so you know.....but in modern view they might not have.
EC 323-Behavioral Economics
Although I thought this class would be easy, it wasn't. The material was fascinating, but it was a different style of testing than I was used to. BUT, I learned from the class and could relate it to my life. We studied about preferences and how they can change according to when the decision actually comes. For instance when going to bed you set your alarm and prefer to wake up at 6AM rather than 7AM. But when you wake up at 6AM the next morning, your preferences change and you prefer to wake up at 7AM. This class teaches about how people act and make decisions every day. Pretty cool.
EC 341-Monetary and Banking Institutions
This class was quite boring and harder for me (because it was boring and I got tired). I actually really wanted to learn the information because I knew it really related to today's time. Unfortunately I will say the teacher wasn't the greatest. Maybe I just didn't give him a chance, but it was really hard to learn the information. The book became my best friend in that class. The cool part of the class was when I was reading and related it to my life or the gospel. Yes, these things actually happen. When reading the risk chapter I definitely could relate to myself. In another chapter about stocks, I read a certain part and automatically thought about the gospel. So, of course, I am going to share it with you:
"[Faith] tends to rise steadily and slowly, collapsing only on those rare occasions when normal [life] mechanisms are out of alignment. For most people, the experience of losing or gaining [faith] suddenly is more memorable than the experience of making it gradually. By being preoccupied with the potential short-term losses associated with crashes, we lose sight of the gains we could realize if we took a longer-term view" (Money, Banking, and Financial Markets. Cecchetti and Schoenholtz, 181).
The bracketed parts are words I replaced. I would have to say though, it was quite the discovery for me. Made my reading a lot more enjoyable.
So that was my semester academically. My last Fall Semester at BU. Crazy. I really enjoyed it though. I broke out of my shell more. I had my ups and my downs. But most importantly, I LEARNED. And not just academically. I learned a lot more about myself and what my desires/passions are.
I am going to continue forward in this battle.
"Go forward and not backward. Courage, brethren; and on, on to the victory! Let your hearts rejoice, and be exceedingly glad. Let the earth break forth into singing."
(Doctrine and Covenants 128:22)

Chapter 35: Assembling myself
Today was the first day of classes and it was not that bad, considering I had a gym class and then one econ course. That's my Tuesday for you!

After classes I decided to assemble my dresser from Ikea. I was excited because I hadn't really done this before. This was my challenge (not that it was all that hard). It was fun and something to accomplish. I took my time, turned on some music, and so on. After a little while, the dresser came together so nicely! Now I have a place to put my clothes rather than living out of a suitcase. Thank goodness for organization.
I am getting used to this apartment more and more each day, as well as loving it. I feel less cramped up in a place, and feel more at home. It makes me excited for when I officially move out of my parents' home.
I can tell already that this is going to be a difficult year, but I also know that it's going to be filled with fun. Like the dresser, I am going to assemble myself this year. I have all the pieces, I just have to trust in the Lord's directions and follow them. One day I will have a purpose like a dresser holding clothes. I'll figure it out. And there's a purpose that I am here in Boston. I tell myself that all the time to keep me going. I could have stayed in Utah easily, but then again, it's not about the easy. I am finding more and more pieces of myself all around, and eventually I will be able to settle down.
Now is the time to discover and assemble.

(This is my schedule for the Fall semester)

Chapter 34: So Long Sweet Summer.....
It's been forever since I have update this blog. My apologies. I have officially moved back to Boston for my Senior year of college. What the?! My goal (one of my goals I should say) is to blog about my year. The experiences, the good, the bad, and just.....everything that I learn. This is my final year! Let's hope I don't screw it up. :)
I've learned so much over this last summer. While I may still have a bit of a curse, it's slowly getting to be better, and more bearable. I met some amazing people too. They are lights in my life and knowing that I have such a great support group makes it easier to get through this next school year. I have a lot to look forward to.
So long sweet summer. It's time to conquer another year and make a Heaven out of the Hell I thought I was in. Really it's all how you look at it. And this is the year I create something amazing in my life.
Also I forgot about the funny story on my plane ride here. I got onto my second flight from Denver to Boston. There was a family that needed a window seat and room for two (so a whole row) and no one was offering as the flight attendant walked down and asked. The guy in my row started getting up and so I was okay with moving as well. Too bad it took someone else to have me do a service. Anyway, she thanked me and then wanted to do something for me and asked what do I drink.....vodka? I thought it was funny and replied that I don't drink. Vodka was offered probably because it was the cheapest, but at least she offered. And that means I look 21! At least.
Welcome to Boston. :)
